Sign in with Different IDs and use Multiple Instances of Windows Live Messenger on same Computer

If you are a regular Hotmail and Windows live user, chances are that you have multiple Windows Live Ids. If you use the Windows Live Messenger, you can sign into only one account at a time. If you want to use another id, you need to sign out of the first account and then sign into other account. Today we will look at a simple registry hack that would let you open Multiple Windows Live Messenger Windows on your computer and sign into different Live or MSN accounts simultaneously.

Using Multiple Instances of Windows Live Messenger

This hack works both on Windows XP as well Windows Vista. The screenshots display how to do it in Windows XP. You need to follow the exact same steps in Windows Vista as well.

Steps to Enable Multiple Messenger instances:

1) Open registry editor > Click Start> Run> Type REGEDIT and Click Ok.

Open RegEdit via Run

2) Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Microsoft > Windows Live.

3) Right click on Messenger folder, move the pointer to New and click the option to create a new DWORD called “MultipleInstances

Make sure you enter Multiple Instances as a single word, without any spaces or it wont work.

Addin teh Multiple Instances DWORD Value

4) Once the string is created, Right Click on MultipleInstances and click Modify. Enter 1 in the Value data field and click on Ok.

Modify the DWORD Value

5) That’s it, You are done! Close Regedit.

Now you can open multiple instances of Windows Live Messenger on same computer and sign in with different Windows Live or Hotmail IDs.

You mentioned that Windows Vista Calendar easily sync with any mobile device, how? I've been trying to find a way to do this and so far the solution eludes me. Thanks.

This is a great bit of info. However, I must mention a couple of issues I ran into.
1- I found that the “Security Options” where it is stated to “Make sure you Check the option – “Run with Highest Privileges”, I needed to “Run only when user is logged on”.
2- the command you say to copy or type is missing the back slashes and causes a little frustration….. it should be –> C:WindowsSystem32schtasks.exe /run /tn “MyProgramExe”.

Again, thanks much for the information to rid us of the annoying UAC…!

Thanks for pointing out the backslash issues Eric.

    1) I guess you are the admin on your PC, hence it worked with the option “User Logged on”. I mentioned highest privileges, to avoid repetition of the process, if the the OS doesn't let you execute the operation.

    2) Actually, WordPress surprisingly removes all the backslash elements on the rendered HTML in a post. Its for some security reasons. The solution is to use \ which will be replaced by on the rendered HTML.

In some cases one would need to use three to display it in within a WordPress post. or can use the & # 92 ; Ascii code to display it.

Thanks for your tip, I have fixed it now and the command is in correct format now.
